The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), began promoting nationwide use of the Communtiy Emergency Response Team (CERT) concept in 1994. Since then, CERTs have been established in hundreds of communties through out the country.

CERT training promotes a partnering effort between emergency services and the people they serve.
|
The goal is for emergency personell to train members of the neighborhoods, community organizations. or workplaces in basic response skills. CERT members are then included into the emergency response resources for their area.

CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety and doing the most amount of good for the greatest amount of people.
The purpose of the CERT program is to improve community preparedness in the event of a disaster. The program is designed to teach basic skills in the event of an emergency.

CERT members maintain and refine their skills by participating in exercises and activities. Almost all fires start out small and could easily be extinguished. CERT members learn about different types of extinguishers and how to use them on live fire training.

|
If a catastrophic event overwhelms or delays the community's first responders, CERT members |
can assist others by applying the basic response and organizational skills that they learned during training. These skills can help save and sustain lives following a disaster until help arrives. CERT skills can also apply to daily emergencies. |
